The prefecture of Kilkis, the "Gate of Greece" as it has been characterized, constitutes the border of Greece with FYROM. The lake Doirani with the separate landscape that distinguishes it, the rivers Galikos and Axios, the mountains Kerkini, Krousia and Paiko and the exceptional cavern above the city, all these compose the splendid landscape of the prefecture.

The area of Kilkis is habited since the Prehistoric years. There have been discovered settlements of the season of Coper and the early season of Iron. Homer had mentioned about Paionia, an ancient area that was located in the north and near the river Axios, which it characterizes as the most beautiful on earth. In Philippe's B years the area was affixed to the Macedonian Kingdom.

Later the area was enslaved to the Romans. In the Byzantine times, a lot of raids were done to it, because it was near the Axios river. In the years after, it was enslaved as the rest of the Greek cities to the Ottomans. The Macedonian Fight follows, where the residents participate in teams of known chieftains. The liberation of the prefecture came in 1913 after the famous battle of Kilkis that determined also the borders of current Greece.

Kilkis, has been famous for the great battles between the Greeks and the Bulgarians in the Macedonian wars with the final victors of the first, acquired more residents after the Destruction of Asia Minor in 1922 from the Greek refugees of Pontos, of Eastern Thrace and of Asia Minor that were settled there.

The visitor can enjoy a walk in the coppice of Xylovrisis, he can admire the graphic houses of the prefecture, he can go fishing in the lake Doirani or simply he can watch the splendid sunset from the lake.
