The prefecture of Kavala borders from the east with the prefecture of Xanthi, from the north with the prefecture of Drama and from the west with the prefecture of Serres, while to the south it has the gulf of Strymonikos and the gulf of Kavala. There is one of the most developed prefectures of Eastern Macedonia in tourism. It offers completely tourist infrastructure and is approachable for vacations of any cost.

Thassos, Thasopoula and Fjdonisj constitute a good supplement of prefecture and give to the visitor a pleasant note of island environment. The mountain Pangeo, which his taller top reaches 1956 meters, and Ypsarion on Thasos are original nature sanctuaries and are surrounded with myths and hundreds stories. The airport of Hrysoupolis "Megas Alexandros" is considered one of the most modern in the Balkans. Flights for Athens but also for a lot of countries abroad are realized daily. The access with buses starts from Athens, Thessalonica and Ioannina.

Kavala, the capital of the prefecture, has all things which make a place desirable. The old city, Imaret, neoclassic brilliant buildings, splendid velvet beaches, the Lighthouse. All those, placed as an amphitheater, compose a colourful magical picture which admires with its beauty from any side you have looked on. The neighboring villages round the city Kavala are also offered for rest on a nature.

Kavala, also known as Neapolis, was the first European city which Saint Paul had visited in his effort to expand Christianity. In the ancient city of Philippi there are buildings of its founder’s epoch and of next epoches up to the in the Middle ages, other ruins and other restored. Every summer a festival of ancient drama is realised in the ancient theatre.

At the hill east of the new Karvali, 16km away from the city of Kavala, stands a small village, that until 1924 was called Tserpendi and was a part of the great property that belonged to the Greek benefactors Konstantinos and Anastasios Sismanoglou. The two brothers offered the village to the Greek government under one condition: to host the refuges from the east coast of Asia and Anatolia . At the contract there is a detailed description of the buildings and the architecture of the village that was inhabited until 1942, one of those families still lives there. The village Tserpendi is mentioned in all maps made since 1750. In the carta of Rigas Fereos is mentioned as Akontisma for the first time and this stays like that until present days.

Akontisma flourished during the roman timed and was deserted while the Byzantine Empire was at its end. At 1987 most of the area, including the vine fields and the olive tree plantation was offered from the ministry of agriculture to the centre for cappadocian studies, of the new Karvali, in order to promote international cultural events and to keep alive the tradition.
