The littoral town of Petalidi is situated at the western coast of the Messinian gulf, halfway of the magnificent route of Kalamata - Koroni, in a location that combines mountains, sea and verdant plains. The town's residences are built amphitheatrically, at a bay which extends in the shape of a horseshoe wherefrom the name of Petalidi is being derived, according to the most predominant etymological version. In the Homeric age, in the location where the modern town is built today, Aepeia was situated, being one of the seven cities, which, as quoted in Iliad's 10th Rhapsody, Agamemnon promised to give as a "dowry" to any of his three daughters that Achilles would choose to be his spouse. Today, Petalidi provides all modern facilities, offering a high level of quality services that cover the existing tourist flow. The central square is a place of everyday meeting and every night is crowded with people. Furthermore, for those that love authentic Greek feasts there are the traditional festivals as well as other local events that are organized by the Municipal Authority all year round.
