Arkadia
The lovely region of Arcadia lies in the heart of the Peloponnesus , just an hour's drive from Athens along the new highway linking Athens , Corinth and Tripoli . Steeped in the legends, traditions, battles and artistic achievements of its people, this historic land has had a continuous impact over the centuries, from ancient times to the Byzantine era and the period of the national struggle for independence in 1821. Not a single link is missing from the chain of Greek history and the country's past can be studied in its entirety in Arcadia , through the many monuments scattered around the region which bear witness to its historical influence.
Getting to know Arcadia properly you must travel across it from one end to the other with your entire senses alert and your mind ready to engage in conversation with the world of imagination and dreams. Then from the depths of the thick forest you may hear the song of Pan and his pipes punctuated by Byzantine hymns and melodies from a monastery that once housed a secret school, or further on down, in a den of klephts (Greek rebels that fought against the Ottomans), the song of Kolokotronis blending with the haunting sound of the klarino (musical instrument like the clarinet) at some contemporary festivity.
Above all, though, this is a land endowed with infinite natural beauty in endless permutations of colour and form. Here, the fragrance of the fir and the pine mingles with the scent of the sea. The sudden changes and contrasts in the landscape, with the azure sky, the rich green of the forest, the light - coloured stone and the deep blue sea cannot fail to titillate the senses of the visitor to Arcadia .
