Evritania
According to UNESCO's world research, the area of Evritania is considered one of the five top cleaner and non polluted areas in the world. It is surrounded by high mountains, by gorges, rivers, lakes and dense vegetation. They call it Switzerland of Greece because of its mountainous ground and it constitutes a challenge for the friends of alternative tourism.
Karpenisi is the capital of the prefecture of Evritania. It is considered one of the most beautiful cities of continental Greece and it is built in the southern sides of Velouhio mountain, in altitude of 960m. The city of Karpenisi was built in the Byzantine times and according to the tradition, the locals, during the winter, hung a piece of meat on the trees of three different localities in the area. There, where the climate was softer and the meat was degraded faster, it was considered that it was the most suitable place for the people to settle. They were absolute right in their choice, as we know today, because when the sightseer reaches Karpenisi, the snowy weather stops and the air softens.
Other known stations of the prefecture are Saint Trinity, Viviani, the famous Agrafa. The village of Agrafa was burned in 1832 by the Italians for retaliation and the only building that was rescued is the current Town hall. Today it is an organized village with traditional cafes, taverns and motels and it has particular tourist movement from interior Greece and abroad.
